It’s been quite a while since LittleBigPlanet was released, perhaps longer then you thought. Two years ago today to be exact, well it was released on the 27th of October 2008 in the US and on The 3rd of November in the EU. So technically it’s not the European birthday of LittleBigPlanet but it is the US birthday, anyway…
We’re celebrating the two year birthday of LittleBigPlanet by taking a look back at the past two years to see what has made LittleBigPlanet such a sensational hit, great things the community has done, all the awesome DLC Mm has giving us and we’re generally gonna bang on about how good LBP is until someone tells us to shut up.
So how did LittleBigPlanet come to be?
well the idea actually started in 2006 and LBP was very different back then, well actually it was called Craft World not LBP. By looking back at some of the concept and ideas you can see that LBP has come an extremely long way.
Alex must have the voice of an angel to use that as his pitch demonstration.

The Mediamolecule crew have always been fun, a bit crazy and well, sometimes just straight up weird:
Someone needs to tell Mm that it is cruel to lock employees in a box.
But that’s why LBP is so good, LBP is all about fun but has a very serious side to it as well, Fun and serious sums the MediaMolecule crew up perfectly. Also with concentration like this no wonder LBP came out so good:
You can do it Alex, move that cursor with your mind!
So LittleBigPlanet started off as a very strange looking game made by some very strange people and a bunch of Sony officials were probably thinking “This lot are a bunch of nutters” But they did it, Mm made a triple A game with less then 40 people and it was an instant hit. But that was just the beginning, LBP was a game that could grow, not only with user created content but with tons of DLC too.
Coolness Content and Updates:
Since LBP was released there’s been an humongous amount of DLC and updates, although Mm had finished the game they still continued making the game. LBP was kept constantly fresh and at one point new DLC was coming out every week. All of the DLC was cool, but some of it was just too epic to handle. You all remember when you cried with joy at the announcement of the MGS Pack. No? hmmm, was it just me then? Anyway… Some of the DLC and updates made big impacts on the game definitely deserves to be looked back on.
This was the first level pack and it was a big one, with the arrival of not only levels but materials, objects, power ups, background and all that other jazz, it gave us a glimpse of the future of LBP, it showed us that the game content of LBP was going to get bigger and bigger. There’s tons of useful stuff that came with the MGS pack and still to this day materials, objects, power ups, etc, etc are used in many levels. The MGS pack made a big impact in LBP and the release of it is truly a day to remember in the history of LittleBigPlanet.
The cornish yarg update was a big one and the first of the 3 big updates Mediamolecule had announced. There was a lot of much needed fixes including the annoying “Failed to Load” bug. There was also many changes and new features that came with this update, but the main thing that made this a big update is that it was apart of a new pack.
The creator pack was released a few days after the “Cornish Yarg Update” and was filled with awesomeness. The global lighting tool, the ability to make bolts, pistons, etc, etc invisible and many other cool things that greatly improved the levels that users were to go on and make.
WATER! It was one of the most requested features of LittleBigPlanet but i don’t think many of us actually thought it would happen, it seemed more like something that would happen for a sequel not an update. But it happened, Mm had given us what we wanted and it was awesome! Soon after the announcement of water the announcement of a beta to test the water was announced:
The next big update was leerdammer and it was filled with even more awesomeness then cornish yarg, which no one thought would be possible but Mm are good at achieving the impossible. The biggest part of this update was “Online Create” We had all been waiting for this since day 1 and it was worth the wait, creating with online friends was a hell of a lot of fun and much quicker and levels made with friends were much more diverse as different users have different styles. All of the new features were great but with the arrival of leerdammer we were told that soon after we would get water in an all new levels pack.
We were told that there would be levels involving water, but no one could of imagined how awesome the levels would be. Pirate themed levels were made a lot on LBP and everyone wanted more pirate themed stuff to make their levels with and once again Mm delivered what we wanted. Captain Sack Sparrow and Davy Jones arived at LittleBigPlanet and they brought water with them, just as a year before this premium level pack had new features that changed level creating and playing in a amazing way.
Sackboy is the cutest game character ever created and the costumes from the story mode let us customize him all we wanted. But Mm gave us a lot more then just a couple costumes, the last 2 years they’ve released more then 100 costumes trough the PSN store. From cute animal costumes to even “more” animals. Killzone, God of War, Metal gear solid, monsters, Marvel, Pirates of the Caribbean, Ghostbusters etc etc LittleBigPlanet was a LittleBigFashion show from day one, no other game got so much licenced, holiday, and unique costume DLC. Yep Sackboy got a huge wardrobe!
LittleBigPlanet players love to dress up in the most awesome, crazy and weirdest costumes imaginable, and they can do that with all the awesomeness that has been released the last 2 years. But some costumes are not for everybody, LittleBigPlanet has got some rare DLC that was only released for special occasions or for achievements. The rare prize crown is the most wanted head wear on LBP, you can win it in competitions or just for being a awesome. Other rare items are the Beta costumes, spacesuit, week 1 shirt and the PSP launch shirt.
The LittleBigPlanet Community:
One of the successes of LittleBigPlanet is the community and the support that the community has for MediaMolecule and the reason the LBP community is so strong is the support the community gets from MediaMolecule. There’s been loads of community members that have really stood out from the crowed, from individuals who have done amazing things to the constant awesomeness that all the fansites organize. The community has done tons of great things for the love of LBP and some of those things more then deserve to be mentioned and remembered.
The first ever Crown competition run by a fansite, Before this contest the crown was only given out trough official contests from Sony and Mm. The Crown was won by AmazingFlyingPoo, LittleBigLand kept the tradition of crown contests alive with 2 more contests. After this competition other fansites also organised crown contests, competitions are now mostly run by the community.
Right from the start these 2 guys where the semi-official podcasters of LittleBigPlanet, their weekly show is being watch by the whole LBP community and after 2 years they still going strong.
A big community project by a select group of littleBigPlanet Central community members, with this logic pack they brought simple logic solutions to creators of all skill levels. The pack had 3 level kits: Beginner Pack Intermediate Pack Advanced Pack This was a very big project that greatly helped the community and showed how organized the community can be.
LittleBigPlanet really showed it’s power in this level series that was made by the LittleBigContra team, 7 creators made a level pack of 8 levels that truly was a homage to the classic NES game Contra. Once again the community showed how organized and passionate they can be.
A contest run buy the LittleBigReviewers group to celebrate their 300 reviews they had done, this time you couldn’t win a virtual crown but i real trophy. The LittleBigReview group had done an amazing job with their reviews and are the only group to do so many reviews and they celebrated it with style.

It’s been an amazing two years!
The two years that LittleBigPlanet has been out has been amazing, no other game has created such a buzz among gamers. LittleBigPlanet is a game that you can feel apart of, through making levels and that fact that Mm are so close to the community. Mediamolecule have paved way for the future of gaming and most importantly they put their heart in it, they don’t do it for the money, they do it for the love although i’m sure they do appreciate the money. Community members have been hired by Mm, Mm have inspired people and created opportunities for them. There really isn’t enough words to express how great Mm are and how great LBP is. So all i’m gonna say is happy birthday LittleBigplanet, thank you Mm for making this game, thank you community for keeping this game alive for the past two years and here’s to another tow years, only this time it’ll be in LittleBigPlanet 2!
