Musical Oddities Inspired By Little Big Planet by Daniel Pemberton
Dec 19
Last week I posted about the Music of Little Big Planet and for some strange reason I completely forgot to even mention Daniel Pemberton... a very poor show on my part.
Who is Daniel Pemberton I hear you ask? Well, as well as the 11 tracks I mentioned in my previous post on the music of Little Big Planet, there is - as I'm sure you've noticed - a whole lot more music crammed into LittleBigPlanet. Most of which has been written by The Daniel Pemberton TV Orchestra.
Daniel sent us a rather nice e-mail a few weeks back to tell us all about his recently released download soundtrack album entitled Little Big Music: Musical Oddities From And Inspired By LittleBigPlanet.

As fans of his quirky and innovative TV music - bringing together everything from turntables to orchestras, bendy rulers to moog synthesizers - the game's developer, Media Molecule, initially approached British composer Daniel Pemberton just to write music for the game's opening sequence ('The Orb Of Dreamers'). However with his musical style so in tune with the ethos of the LittleBIGPlanet world Daniel ended up contributing about 40% of the game's soundtrack under the alias of The Daniel Pemberton TV Orchestra.
When asked what his influences are Daniel cites 1950’s cocktail music, British children’s TV and composers such as Esquivel, Jon Brion, Ennio Morricone, Nino Rota and Mark Mothersbaugh as influences.
This distinctive score that Daniel and his Orchestra have created for Little Big Planet features an innovative, childish and quirky mix of Mellotron choirs, twangy guitars, turntables, toy organ loops, ukuleles, synths and pizzicato cellos. Many of the tracks on this album will be instantly recognisable to any of the millions of gamers who regularly play LittleBIGPlanet.
In fact, do you perchance recognize this little BIG tune
Alongside the eleven tracks featured in the game this unique eighteen track album also features other material that didn’t make the final product, as well as an exclusive specially extended version of the game’s wondrous opening music ‘The Orb Of Dreamers’. The cover has been designed by Rex Crowle, one of the lead artists on the game.
Little BIG Music: Musical Oddities From And Inspired By LittleBIGPlanet was released on iTunes and all other major digital retailers via 1812 Recordings on the 15th December 2008. Make sure you go and order your copy right now, it is the law!

I bought the album last night and must say it’s highly enjoyable. Great fan of cocktail/lounge music myself, I loved the mix of the quirky with elements of jazz and funk. Thoroughly recommended
Now if only I could get some permission for usage a small LittleBigLand project hehe
