Recently, Steven Isbell – LittleBigPlanet Community Coordinator, posted on Planetarium earlier after the release of patch 1.12, explaining the removal of “boos” from the level ratings. Here is what he posted:

For anyone wondering why we’ve suddenly decided to take the action to remove the Boos from the game, here’s just a few words on the thought process behind the decision.

We’re all for constructive criticism to help aid a creator and potentially improve their creation skills.

However after looking at the current rating systems for a VERY long time… (And believe me, it was not just a spur of the moment decision.)

We found that Boos have little place in the current rating system.

Such feedback and criticism simply cannot be summed up in a single emoticon and generally speaking we found that the most of the time, it was being misused to just grief and harass people.

If you truly wish to criticise a level in a constructive way, then the Reviews and Comments section are more than sufficient for such an action and if you really feel the need to inform a creator why you disliked their level, then you can leave a review and state exactly why you disliked their level.

Boos and rude comments without any actual critique, just do not help the creator in any possible way and therefore we removed the Boos to both tackle the issue of in-game griefing and to encourage people to actively provide actual feedback to the creator.

It will certainly take some getting used to for everyone who has been playing LittleBigPlanet 2 for a long time now…

However if you look at a level’s Play/Yay ratio, you should be able to get a good idea of how popular it is and if you’re still not sure, then you can always check out the reviews left for that level.

Which ultimately will tell you so much more about another player’s opinion of a level, than a single sad face ever could.

    No! This still isn’t right!

    • AgressivePandas

I personally don’t see what the problem is. Why do you want to have the boos? You gotta have reasons.

      • TheBeatles1964

I respect MM decisions to disable the boo’s I think that will help also bring back a huge bunch of the LBP community because my one friend left because she got spammed with boo’s on all her levels and her levels were great one was MM pic but she left because of the spammed boo’s from someone that disliked her. So I see this as a good thing.

        • Vonnny

Nope. The exact opposite is happening. People are giving up on this game.

  • Cades99

Hell is for PayPal and Time Warner Cable, silly child.

  • Hammertoe

I want the “boos” back. Nothing motivates me more than a negative opinion. You can “yay” my stuff all you want but it provides absolutely no motivation.

  • Ahmadstheman

Here is my opinion I think that we need the “boos there were three type of ratings 1: you can boo meaning that you didn’t enjoy the level and you would like to boo it because that level sucks so bad it doesn’t even deserve a comment or review 2: leaving no “yay” or boo that means it wasn’t good enough yet wasn’t bad so you just leave it 3: “yaying” means it was great level that you believe is great and others should see this level.

  • Mudhut4

I’m glad boos are gone, loads of people were booing my levels for no reason and I was getting a bad rap!

  • Muffin484484

actually I’m quite happy this is gone
there are lots of ‘kiddies’ walking around in the world of little big planet just booing everything for no reason

I also had a few people hearting AND booing my levels at the same time – what makes absolutely no reason at all…

another example: Boo + “I CANT FINISH THE LEVEL!!!”I’ve played the level about 10 times just to find the part when he got stuck but I couldn’t find anything… Then I wrote him a message in which I asked him to tell me where the problem was, so I could fix so no one will experience this issue again. Over a month I’ve sent this message 3 times – no answer.when I went to the creators planet it said he was 7 years old…Since so many players left little big planet 2 it’s quite hard to get plays.Of course you’re always sad when you see a boo on your level that could destroy all the good ratings.

  • Calyst_aayla

I think its a great thing, because ppl for no reason decide to spam with boos, etc. Same with the whole being able to disable comments and reviews. Only thing I wish is that you could set it up so you can block certain ppl from commenting on your profile or levels. Or maybe have it like face book where you can set up so that you can just have friends comment and no one else. Sorta like how lbp.me works and psn. Its really sad how ppl decide to bully and spam ppl for no reason. I have encountered it a few times and its not fun. I’d really like to see this problem fixed.

    • Unhappy

to be honest, Mm should have seen that coming. Spammers can be found everywhere. I’m glad they added the disable comments and reviews feature but the boo option being expelled was just wack.

Meh, as I say it, if Mm doesn’t bring the boo back, LittleBigPlanet 2′s community will be destroyed.
Me and a load of other players are already playing other games now.

  • Tecnoboy1

Who cares about ratings anyway, the community is a disaster in a lot of ways once you come onto a forum like here. ;)

    • TheBeatles1964

      I agree with u completely.

      • http://lbp2blog.com Tyler Stewart

        O_o

        • TheBeatles1964

No I am not saying the form it self just the way people use it I think that’s how he thought about it to. I was mostly agreeing with the community part not the forms because this form is awesome, just people ruin it with complaining like I said in my previous comment I respect MM decisions. P.S. this is not out of anger just wanted to let you know on how I was agreeing to technobo1′s comment

  • Vonnny

This is the by far the biggest mistake Mm has ever made. The community is DESTROYED. I’m a well known creator and I actually admire the boos so I can see how bad or how good my levels are. I’ve just lost hope for this game. Me and a lot of other people on my friends list are moving onto other games now…

  • Unhappy

LBP is turning into Facebook. I was appalled when I saw the words ‘Did you LIKE?’ appear on my screen. The option to ‘like’ a level is just sooooo bull. We already have a heart system, so what’s the pint of ‘liking’ a level?! It has no significance. They should have AT LEAST made it useful and maybe it acted sort of like the heart system or something idk… I’m shocked by the audacity of Mm to stab loyal players like me in the back with this new update.

  • Unhappy

The reasoning behind this is somewhat understandable… but to me the boo system acted as more of a comparison… If they get rid of boos then they should bring back the star ratings from the original LBP. f they don’t then the developers will eventually see what a horrible mistake they made.

  • sackbot14

I don’t see why it is such a big deal. If you really care so much as to leave LBP, then you don’t see the game’s purpose. It’s about creativity, not the little faces people stick on your levels… just create and have fun!

  • http://twitter.com/pate59psn Veikko Lehtinen

It’s Mm’s game, they do what they want with it. They can’t make everyone happy. +Why do you miss boos? Did you like getting them to your levels? Did you like booing others works? Who cares anyway? If you don’t like the level>DO NOT YAY IT. If you’re not happy with it, and it ruins your whole gaming experience, you don’t really need to play LBP then (you are not forced to do something you don’t enjoy).

  • Praetorian7547

I agree with the comment way up above. Bring back stars. It gives an average rather than a ratio. If boos come back, they need to add a feature that REQUIRES them to give a real reason, be it copied, spam, H4H, or a hate level. If it’s not legit, they should give a feature that allows you to do a semi-grief report. It can report if it’s just a troll or hate. THAT would fix the community. Spread the word if you agree. -Praetorian7547 (Yeah that’s my PSN ID)

  • Sackboy1/Enenem

I am happy and unhappy with this because now nobody can boo my levels if they’re good but now we can no longer boo rubbish and copied levels. If they bring boo option back maybe for reviews they have to be moderated before they get through maybe?
