From an article over at PS3attitude – Alex Evans of Media Molecule has claimed that the decision to drop the ability to import images into Little Big Planet was due to time constraints.

The good news however is that the image import tool will be released by Christmas, meaning you will not have to rely on the EyeToy to create personalised stickers for your Little Big Planet levels

UPDATE:

Unfortunately this story has now been denied by Sam_Protagonist on the Official PlayStation Forum here - where he claims the only way to import images into Little Big Planet is still via the PS Eye. Very sorry if I got your hopes up :(
