My first day in Little Big Planet

LittleBigPlanet

I should point out that I had the pleasure of beta testing Little Big Planet so I experienced the initial wow factor months ago. However I was still as giddy as a school girl when my parcel dropped through the letterbox yesterday, tearing open the non-descript packaging whilst simultaneously trying to power up my PlayStation 3, grab a controller and unsheathe the game from it`s cellophane wrapping would have looked amusing to onlookers. Frustratingly I had to download and install 2 updates before I could install the game, but at 57 and 20 Mb each they didn’t take too long and neither did the game install.

animated sackboy swinging arm It was all familiar territory as I walked and jumped through the introductory level, with  the dulcet tones of Mr Fry narrating my passage. The first levels too were nothing new as I`d played them to death in the beta, therefore I made swift work of them and made my way to the first new area for me, the Savannah. And then it hit me: how incredibly clever the folks at Media Molecule have been with the design of the levels. There`s always something new, a new slant on a traditional idea and things that frankly, you`ve never ever seen in any other game. Once I had made my way to `The Wedding` I was genuinely impressed with the originality I was witnessing. The sound effects and music are simply fantastic and Little Big Planet constantly rewards you with new objects, materials, costumes and collectables.

So far I have not even attempted to design a level, I`m still having way too much fun with the story mode and the online play. It`s great fun meeting up with friends in either theirs or your pod, which inevitably gets vandalized by visitors – you just have to :) – and then sharing adventures both in story mode and in user created levels.

Unfortunately, all is not rosy in Little Big Planet – it`s not perfect and a few points frustrate me. Firstly, Sackboy is generally well behaved and does as you tell him, but occasionally you press the jump button and he – well – doesn`t. If you`re lucky he`ll do a little skip into certain death where a full on leap is required to avoid it. On a few occasions the jumping in and out of the screen makes it`s own mind where you want to go. The online play is still plagued with lag at times, which seems to get worse the longer you play. Hopefully this last point will get addressed server-side.

So to sum up…yes, it`s great and I love it despite the few flaws. It`s incredibly addictive and I`m sure the level designing will keep me occupied for many hours after I`ve finished story mode. I`ll keep my fingers crossed that Media Molecule will release patches and server fixes soon to really add that final polish it desperately deserves.
